A cold calling script fails when it is about you. The ones below are built around a single sentence about the prospect: something they posted, a role they are hiring for, or a person who sent you.

Each script has the same four parts: a permission question, the reason, a question about the problem and a small ask. What changes from one situation to the next is where the reason comes from. Fill the brackets with something true, read it aloud twice, and change any word you would not say yourself.

This page is the words. How many times to call, when to call, and the US rules for B2B calling are in our cold calling tips.

What does a cold calling script actually need?

Four parts, in this order. Each one has one job, and the call fails at the first part that does not do its job.

A hand writing lines in a notebook with a yellow pencil
PartIts jobWhat it sounds like
PermissionAsk for a moment instead of assuming it"Hi Dana, it is Sam from Acme. Can I take a moment to tell you why I called?"
ReasonOne true sentence about them, not about you"You posted on Tuesday that your SDRs spend Mondays building lists."
Problem questionCheck the problem is real before you pitch"Is that still how the week starts?"
AskA small, specific next step"Worth 20 minutes on Thursday at 10 or 2?"

The words inside the reason matter more than the order. In How to Master Cold Calls, published in 2024 by Gong with 30 Minutes to President's Club from more than 300 million calls, pitches built on buzzwords had a 5.5 percent success rate, social proof 12 percent and problem language 16 percent.

What this means for a B2B sales team: describe the prospect's problem in the words they would use. "Your reps build lists by hand" beats "an AI-powered intent platform" almost three to one.

What do you say when you call about a post they wrote?

This is the easiest cold call there is, because the prospect already told the world they have the problem. Your reason is their own sentence.

An open blank notebook with a pen and pencils on a dark wooden desk

Script: after a LinkedIn post, Reddit thread or X post

"Hi [name], it is [you] from [company]. Can I take a moment to tell you why I called?"

"You wrote on [platform] last [day] that [their words, shortened]. I work with [type of team] on exactly that."

"Is that still the situation, or have you sorted it since?"

If yes: "Worth 20 minutes on [day] at [time] or [time] to show you how [one similar team] handled it?"

Quote them closely. If they wrote "our SDRs waste Mondays on lists", say "Mondays on lists", not "prospecting efficiency". People recognise their own words, and that recognition buys the next 30 seconds.

Field note: skip "I saw your post", which every automated LinkedIn message says now, and name what the post said. It proves you read it.

What do you say when the company is hiring for the problem?

A job posting tells you a team is growing and which work they think needs a person. Call the hiring manager and make the call about helping the new hire.

Script: after a job posting

"Hi [name], [you] from [company]. Do you have a moment? It is about the [role] you are hiring for."

"The posting says the role covers [task from the posting]. Teams I talk to usually find that eats [part of the week]."

"Is that the gap you are hiring to close, or is it more about [other part of the posting]?"

"If the new person starts with [task] handled, would that change how fast they ramp? Happy to show you in 20 minutes."

Never suggest the hire is a mistake. The manager fought for that headcount. Position what you sell as making the new person productive faster.

What do you say when someone sent you?

Use a name only when it is true and the person agreed. A borrowed name that turns out to be false ends the deal and the referral.

Script: a real referral

"Hi [name], [you] from [company]. [Referrer] suggested I call you. Do you have a minute?"

"[Referrer] mentioned you are dealing with [problem]. We helped [referrer's team] with [specific result]."

"Is [problem] on your list right now?"

"Would [day] at [time] work for 20 minutes? I can bring what we did for [referrer's team]."

In the 2024 Gong and 30MPC data, opening with the fact that the prospect's name came up had an 11.24 percent success rate, the best of the openers they measured.

What this means for a B2B sales team: ask every happy customer for one name. It turns the strongest opener in the data into one you can use honestly.

How do you get past the gatekeeper?

By being straight with them. The 2024 guide found that reaching a gatekeeper cuts a call's chance of success by 39 percent, so the goal is to be put through or to learn the best time to call back.

A woman on a phone call at her laptop in a home kitchen

Script: the gatekeeper

"Hi, this is [you] from [company]. I am calling for [name] about [the reason, in five words]. Is [first name] around?"

If asked what it is about: "[Name] wrote about [topic] last week, and I have something specific on it. It is a short call."

If they are not available: "When is the best time to reach [first name] directly? And is [name]@[company] the right email?"

Use the first name and keep the reason short and real. Gatekeepers screen out vague calls. A specific reason they can repeat to their boss gets passed on.

What should a cold call voicemail say?

Very little. A voicemail is rarely returned, and its job is to get the email that follows it opened.

Script: voicemail, under 20 seconds

"Hi [name], [you] from [company]. I am calling about [the reason, one sentence]. I will send you an email with the details today. The subject is [subject]. Again, [you], [number]."

The 2024 Gong and 30MPC guide found that voicemails cut the connect rate by 28 percent, but nearly double the reply rate of the email after them, from 2.73 to 5.87 percent.

What this means for a B2B sales team: leave the voicemail only when the email is ready, and send it the same hour with the subject you said out loud. Our guide to cold email follow-ups covers what that email and the next ones should say.

How do you answer the objections you will hear?

With a question that keeps the call going. Gong's 2024 analysis of objections across 300 million cold calls sorts them into three kinds, and found that the five most common ones are 74 percent of all objections reps hear.

Hands holding a notebook of call notes and a red pen over a table
Objection typeShare of objectionsA reply that keeps the call going
Dismissive ("Not interested", "Send me an email")49.5%"Fair, you did not ask for this call. I rang because of your post about list building. Is that still a problem, or did you solve it?"
Situational ("No budget", "Bad timing", "Call me next quarter")42.6%"Makes sense. So I call at the right time: what would have to change for this to matter next quarter?"
Existing solution ("We already use something")7.9%"Good, then you know the problem. What would you change about how it works today?"

What this means for a B2B sales team: half of all objections are reflexes. Write and practise three replies, one per row, and you have an answer for most calls before they happen.

How to tell the script is working

A script is working when the share of connected calls that end in a meeting goes up. Count it for two weeks before you change a word, then change one part at a time. Put your rates into the calculator to see what a better script is worth in meetings a month.

How Leadalf fills in the reason line

Every script on this page has the same blank: the bracket that holds the reason. Leadalf fills it. It does not dial and it does not write the script for you.

It watches LinkedIn, Reddit, X, the Meta Ad Library and job postings for people who match your ICP and just said or did something relevant, scores each one, and delivers the people who pass into Instantly, HeyReach or a CSV with what they said attached. That is the post for the first script and the job posting for the second, ready before you pick up the phone.

The rest is still yours: the permission question, the problem question and the ask. How it works shows where the signals come from.

Cold calling script: FAQ

What is a good cold calling script?

One with four parts: a permission question, one true sentence about why you called this person, a question that checks the problem is real, and a small specific ask. Everything else is improvised around those four.

How long should a cold calling script be?

Short enough to say the opener in under 30 seconds. The full call runs longer: the 2024 Gong and 30 Minutes to President's Club guide puts the median successful cold call at 4.8 minutes, and most of that is the prospect talking about the problem and two objections being handled.

Should you read a cold calling script word for word?

Read the opener and the reason word for word until they sound like you. After that, keep the order of the four parts and use your own words. A rep reading a full paragraph sounds like a recording, and the prospect hangs up on recordings.

What do you say when a prospect says "not interested"?

Agree that they did not ask for the call, repeat the reason in one line, and ask whether the problem is still there. Gong found in 2024 that dismissive objections like this are 49.5 percent of all objections, so most of them are a reflex rather than a decision.

What should a cold call voicemail say?

Your name, the reason in one sentence, and that an email is on its way. Keep it under 20 seconds and send the email within the hour, because the voicemail mainly raises the reply rate of that email.
